For stretching of resin sections in ultramicrotomy and for making wax seals on glass knife troughs.
Its small, exposed heating element can reduce sectioning compression further than is possible using solvent vapour. It also reduces compression in semi-thin sections and eliminates the use of toxic chloroform vapour.
The element quickly forms wax seals around glass knives along the wax lined knife trough.
Two AA batteries power this model. The element is only heated when the switch is depressed; that is normally only for a couple of seconds, so batteries last a long time. In a very busy laboratory, these can be substituted with rechargeable batteries.
